Realized She Had It All Along
Sara Davis first heard about Life-Work Planning Center through a woman from the community in 2006. With over 25 years of work experience and 27 jobs she was struggling with work, due to a vision impairment. She was let go from different positions because she was unable to perform as well as other employees. Employers had said she did great work, but her vision was a barrier to her employment. At this time, Sara was also in search for housing. Sara decided to attend Life-Work Planning Center workshops. She expressed it was a decision she did not regret.
Sara attended workshops on decision-making, goal-setting, and how to find balance in life. Sara said that she found the workshops to be helpful and inspiring. It was like an answer that she had been looking for. The lack of job stability was incredibly difficult for Sara and she found herself experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms. Sara said Life-Work Planning Center helped build upon her strength to keep going and find new opportunities.
She remembers taking the Myers Briggs Personality Test and was amazed at how it “brought out all the colors in you, and it showed what you had to offer.” After Sara attended workshops she took advantage of what she learned and earned a four-year degree in Alternative Medicine, from Sister Rosalind Gefre’s School of Professional Massage. She said it was “the best decision I ever made,” she always had an interest in alternative medicine. Sara expressed she had all the education a person could want, but her eyesight kept her from keeping jobs. Job loss was mentally and emotionally draining for Sara since she prided herself in her hard work.
Sara made the decision to come back to Life-Work Planning Center in April of 2014. This time around she wanted help writing a résumé and cover letter. She said LWPC provided her with resources to keep her moving forward. Sara is now involved with the State Services for the Blind, and is enrolled in a job work program. She is getting paid for work! Sara said it has been an answer to what she has been looking for.
Life-Work Planning Center helped Sara see her strength to keep going and find new opportunities. Sara talked about the support she received from the other women in the workshop. She said the support helped build her confidence. “It is like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Life-Work Planning Center helped me see all I had to offer, that I had it all along.”
Sara believes she is better prepared to find good secure employment. “It would be a weight lifted off of my shoulders. I always worked as well as I could, but having others see my potential is essential.”
Sara gave a piece of advice for anyone looking for help with employment or wanting to learn more about themselves. “Look into Life-Work Planning Center they have a lot to offer. They help carry you through until one day you realize you can support yourself.”
